If the base turns to hard because of a lack of grip or vibration, the pendant may become stuck to the surface where it was originally seated.

A hand drill and/or some other form of pliers may be used to loosen screws from the pendant or to push down a finger with only the tip of the nail forming the base. If the base is bent, the metal screws may be crushed by rolling around on the base or with a wooden spoon.
